A military governor of the Eastern Region of Nigeria who led the Republic of Biafra in the late 1960s after the Nigerian Civil War. He previously served as the Governor of Eastern Region, Nigeria.
He studied history at Epsom College, Lincoln College, and Oxford University and received his master's.
A standoff between him and a colonel led to the Nigerian Civil War in 1966.
